Maison Rocher

Tranquil hillside gite in the Correze
ABOUT

ABOUT

At the end of 2015, we began to transform a dilapidated old house into a little piece of French heaven. Our aim was to create a haven which would encapsulate all the joys of the rural French idyll and the romance, cheese and red wine that accompany it!

Since then, we’ve come to love the village of Segur-le-Chateau and the Correze. We’re looking forward to sharing this beautiful part of France with guests and friends.

Our guiding vision when renovating Maison Rocher was to revive and enhance the Correzian character of the house, while making it a comfortable and peaceful holiday bolthole for guests, family and friends. The gite sleeps 4 people, in 2 double bedrooms. We hope to have an additional bedroom available in 2024.

A large, south facing terrace leads through patio doors into the ground floor kitchen-dining room, with an attached utility room. In the summer, the terrace is the perfect area for relaxed outdoor dining. There is also bathroom on the ground floor. The first floor comprises a comfortable lounge with log burner, double bedroom and ensuite shower and WC. There is a further double bedroom on the second floor. The gite has electric heating throughout, although this isn’t usually necessary between May and September!

ROOMS

Accommodation

The gite sleeps 4 adults, in 2 double bedrooms. We hope to have an additional bedroom available in 2024. The first floor bedroom overlooks the terrace and has an ensuite bathroom. The attic bedroom has a view across the valley and a large juliet balcony window. A travel cot is available on request.

We provide a complementary welcome basket and kitchen essentials. 5 minutes walk away, the centre of the village offers Le P’ti Bar bistro, La Part des Anges restaurant, open April-October. Kate and Richard at Le P’ti Bar and Manu at La Part des Anges provide wonderful, fresh food, in beautiful surroundings. La Ruelle is an exciting new venue in the village, open year round, offering food, drinks, music and events.

Fresh seasonal vegetables and produce are available directly from  several farms nearby. Opposite Maison Rocher, at Ferme & Boutique Sauvage, David and Jovanna offer fresh local produce, locally baked bread from the Brood bakery and coffee and tisanes. There are large supermarkets and other amenities within 10 minutes drive at Lubersac, Arnac Pompadour and a little further away at St. Yriex la Perche.

Free Wifi

Free wifi is available through a 4G router using the mobile 'phone network. Online content is accessible through our Amazon Firestick. There is no landline telephone, but mobile reception in the gite is good.

Garden

The large south facing terrace is a perfect place to relax to the gentle sound of the Auvezere river in the valley below, while taking in the views of our own meadow and bamboo forest as well as surrounding farms and fields. There is about 1/3 of an acre of meadow and terraced land in front of the house. In summer, the meadow is usually a blaze of colour with wildflowers, butterflies and bees.  Pets are welcome, and our terrace is gated and fenced, but the garden is currently not securely fenced and there are often horses and donkeys in the surrounding fields.

Housekeeping

The gite is cleaned and bedding changed before guests arrive, however, in keeping with gite tradition, we expect guests to leave the gite as they found it. A utility room with a washing machine and dishwasher is provided. If you are staying for more than a week, the gite can be cleaned and bedding changed during your stay for an extra charge.

Travel & Transport

Road: Segur-le-Chateau is approximately an 8 hour drive from Calais and other Channel ports, and a similar distance from Zeebrugge, using the toll motorways. It is possible to travel avoiding the toll roads, but this will add to the journey time.

Air: The nearest airport to Segur-le-Chateau is Limoges (50 minutes away), served by direct flights to Leeds (April-November), East Midlands, Manchester and Stansted, with car hire on site. Brive-le-Gaillarde also about 50 minutes away and has services to Paris Orly and Stansted. Bergerac and Bordeaux airports are 2-2.5 hours away and are served by links to a number of cities across the UK and continental Europe.

Rail: Brive-la-Gaillarde and Limoges have intercity rail connections to Paris Austerlitz. Paris to Limoges takes approximately 4 hours. Both stations have car hire on site. Unfortunately, many of the local rail lines have been closed in recent years, but stations at  St. Yrieix la Perche, Uzerche and Vigeois remain in service.

Pool

We don't have our own pool yet. However, the Auvezere river at Moulin de Grimal is 5 mins walk away, and is perfect for splashing around and cooling off in. You can also get to the river in the village centre, where there is a shady riverside picnic area.

The Correze is known as the French Lake District, and is home to hundreds of lakes, many with beaches, swimming, boating, bars and restaurants. Our favourites are Lac Pontcharal and Rouffiac, both about 25 minutes drive away, and there is also a lovely lake and beach at St. Yrieix la Perche, 15 minutes away.

Children & Accessibility

We welcome families, and facilities such as a travel cot, baby bath, high chair and a range of toddler play equipment can be provided on request. However, please be aware that access to the attic bedroom is via a fairly steep set of stairs which may be unsuitable for little legs, or for people with reduced mobility. We have a young child ourselves, and have tried to ensure the house is as child safe as is reasonable in an old rural French house. Child gates for the stairs can also be  provided on request. Please contact us with any queries.

THINGS TO DO

Marches des Producteurs

Throughout July and August, a local producers market takes place on Monday evenings. The Marches des Producteurs are a highlight of the summer in Segur, and draw local producers of wine, fish, meat, cheese, bread and much else. The food can be taken away or cooked and consumed there and then in the village green, by the riverside, accompanied by live music! Each market evening often draws between 500 and 1000 people. The village also hosts other events including hog roasts, musical evenings and night tours, through the summer.

In Segur

We hope you will find the gite a wonderful place to spend time and relax, enjoying the tranquility of the Correze. A 10 minute walk will take you to the village centre, where L'Pti bar is a perfect place to relax with a drink or food, enjoying the ambience of the shady village square. La Part des Anges restaurant offers a relaxed dining atmosphere, either indoors or on their riverside terrace. There are a couple of small artists' galleries and there are a number of walking paths around the village and the surrounding hills and woods. The Auvezere river is a 5 minute walk away. There is also a small tourist information office and post office in the village.

Markets & Events

Almost every town and village hosts a food and produce market through the summer months. They are great places to sample the local cheeses, wines and local produce of all sorts. Some of the larger markets continue all year. One of the best and biggest is the Sunday market at Objat, about 30 minutes drive away. Segur, like many other villages, hosts a vide grenier or flea market. These are brilliant for picking up vintage bargains, or just soaking up the atmosphere.  Limoges hosts a large monthly vide grenier and market, which is definitely worth a visit.

Leisure Activities

The Correze and the surrounding areas offer something for everyone -fascinating culture and history, outdoor activities, great food and drink. However, the biggest attraction for many is the serenity and the wonderful outdoors - wooded valleys, rivers and hundreds of lakes. The area is a perfect for walking, cycling, equestrian activities, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, as well as relaxing by the lakes. Canoeing and kayaking trips can be arranged on the nearby Vezere river and on the Dordogne river. The local lakes are delightful places for walking, or cooling off with a swim, followed by a picnic or a meal at the lakeside restaurants. The huge Lac Vassiviere is home to  an outdoor sculpture park, as well as many other leisure facilities and is a great place to spend a day.

Around the Correze and beyond...

There are  many beautiful historic towns and villages nearby in the Correze and in the Dordogne, including the Unesco World Heritage site at Hautefort. There is stunning natural scenery in the surrounding areas, with the Parque Naturel de Millevaches, the Parque Naturel de Perigord Limousin and the spectacular Dordogne valley with its spectacular castles, all within in easy driving distance for day trips. The bustling and historic city of Bordeaux is a 2 hour drive away. 30 minutes west of Bordeaux is the beautiful and wild Atlantic coast, perfect for surfing, amazing fresh seafood and exploring endless beaches and dunes.
